With Russia getting a new forestry code, severe criticism has sparked among environmentalists. The code would transfer responsibility for forest protection and maintenance from the federal to regional governments, also removing it from private ownership!
The code has been approved by 128-10 vote from Federation Council, with four abstentions. Criticism came from environmental organization, Greenpeace blaming it to be ‘lacking in enabling legislation to make it workable’.
Alexei Yaroshenko, coordinator of Greenpeace Russia’s forestry program fears that with the law going into effect — if President Vladimir Putin signs it by Dec. 1 – ‘There will be full anarchy starting Jan. 1’.
But, will that leave the forests with no owners and no protectors, is yet to be seen!
