How to Make Your Work-Life More Sustainable

Make Your Work-Life More Sustainable

Today, more businesses are taking steps to make sure they are not leaving a huge environmental footprint. From remote work to encouraging sustainability, there are a number of ways companies can be more sustainable. Even if you aren’t a business owner, there are a few ways you can make sure your own work life is leaving the impact you want it to.

1. Try Working Remotely Whenever Possible

You likely already heat and cool your home when you are in it, and the amount of extra electricity you would use by telecommuting is likely very little. And working from home means you do not need to worry about the impact of your transportation on the environment. Not every company allows employees to work from home, but try to work remotely whenever you can. Ask your employer if they would be willing to reduce your commute time by allowing you to work from home part of the time if they are not willing to switch you completely to remote work.

If you are truly concerned about the impact of your transportation to and from work, you might consider working at another company, or another industry if your type of work doesn’t allow for remote work. If you are considering switching careers, you might consider getting your degree to improve your marketability. There are many student loans available to help you pay for your education.

2. Using Sustainable Commuting

If you are not currently working remotely, you can encourage coworkers to take the most sustainable transportation methods possible. If you live close to a coworker, you might be able to carpool to work some days. And some employers might offer subsidies to employees for using public transportation, such as the train or bus. There are many benefits of switching to a sustainable lifestyle but in this example specifically you can expect an improvement in your physical health should you choose to incorporate more walking or cycling to workas opposed to driving.

3. Using Renewable Sources of Energy

Using greener sources of power, such as wind or solar, is easier today than in the past, especially since there are so many options out there. This might be challenging to do at home, depending on where your power comes from, but you could encourage your workplace to make the switch. Depending on the area your business is located in, you might be able to shop around for the supplier of your electricity, allowing you to choose a greener option. Most suppliers of electricity offer environmentally-friendly plans that renewable sources have created. The prices are sometimes more competitive than plans that rely more on natural gas, coal, or another source.

4. Using Natural Light

Try to work in natural light whenever possible. This can reduce the amount of electricity you use during your work day. And working near natural light can actually increase your productivity because it impacts your body’s natural rhythm, helping you stay awake during the day and encouraging you to fall asleep at night. You might install a smart light at your home or work office because these will detect when someone is there and turn on automatically. They can turn off when you leave, ensuring you are not using electricity when you are not there.
