A new paradise found in a Tanzanian mountain

in tanzanias rubeho mountains

Tanzania’s Rubeho Mountains preserves a paradise of new species. More than 160 animal species, which includes a new species of frog and 11 endemic species, have been discovered there by field surveys.

This finding has alerted the need for protecting the biologically rich wilderness zone, including the broader Eastern Arc Mountain more, the Switzerland-based World Wildlife Fund feels. Activities like cutting the woods clear for agriculture, logging and poaching are to be strictly kept away from the region.

Neil Burgess, WWF African conservation scientist said,

The wealth of life that’s supported by the Rubehos is typical of Tanzania’s Eastern Arc Mountain range… We’ve documented some destruction already underway, so protecting this mountain range (is) an urgent priority, not just for its unique wildlife, but also for the people and economy of Tanzania.

The Eastern Arc catches and gathers water for Tanzanians — generating about 50 percent of the nation’s total electricity through its hydropower.
