The world’s largest mud city on Peru’s northern coast is being damaged by heavy rain! Several adobe walls in the ancient ruins of Chan Chan are severely damaged by an unusual downpour, according to a report by the newspaper El Comercio.

The usually arid coastal desert zone have experienced an usual climate condition with heavy rain, saturating the walls’ top seven inches in a southern portion of the ruins, also penetrating the sides! Cristobal Campana the director of the archaeological site told the newspaper.

Nearly 300 miles northwest of the capital Lima, more rains are expected in the arid desert area. Workers there have covered the walls with plastic tarps at the site near Trujillo. The Peru’s government and UNESCO — to prevent damage — have dug trenches for divertng flood waters. As measures, they have also covered ancient murals with tarpaulins stretched over scaffolds.

To protect the ruins, President Alan Garcia’s government allocated emergency funds last month. But, all mercies are now left to the nature and its changing weather!
