Strongest Storm hits China in 50 years, killing at least 111

The most powerful typhoon – Saomai — hit China in 50 years, raging across its southeastern coast Thursday. It claimed at least 111 lives, capsizing ships, destroying buildings — forcing 1.5 million people from their homes!

The winds swept across the country with up to 135 mph, felling lands at the town of Mazhan — in coastal Zhejiang province, as reported by the Xinhua News Agency, cited by the weather officials.

According to Xinhua, with the death toll put at two Thursday following the storm’s rage, it quickly rose Friday, reaching 111 by midday! Recovery efforts are under way.
