Spewing volcano leads to evacuate 11,000 people

mount merapi active

With the Indonesian mountain pouring out lava and cloud for days, amid signs of escalating volcanic activity from the Mount Merapi, 11,000 people have been ordered to evacuate the region.

The level of the volcano’s spewing out of lava and toxic gases on the island of Java has increased on Tuesday. The administration is using trucks and cars for transporting people to temporary shelter, according to officials.

This increase in the volcanic activity followed the magnitude 6.3 quake on 27 May that struck the nearby region, killing nearly 6,000 people. According to Reuters, a cloud of gas from the mountain stretched for 4km (2.4 miles), with lava flows spreading up to 7km (four miles) from the crater.
