New earthquake warning method to analyze even minor micro-tremors

foi the swedish defense research agency logo 9The Swedish Defense Research Agency, FOI has developed a new stress analysis-method in earthquake research. With the help of the new method, the earthquake’s complete stress tensor can be estimated and changes in the stress magnitude and the instability of faults can be monitored.

This method roots the analysis in the world of physics in a manner, which normally, the earthquake methods lack, making it more valid helping better efforts for providing warnings.

The new method makes use of micro-tremor data — data for quakes with a magnitude of between -1 and 5 — offering the greatest possible amount of information for the analysis. Now, the sites of coming earthquakes can be determined years before they occur.

Ragnar Slunga, the scientist behind the method said,

What is crucial to whether the analysis is reliable is to what extent the small quakes are analyzed. Especially if the method is to be used to warn people immediately before a coming earthquake, a few days or a few hours before the quake, it’s necessary to analyze very minor micro-tremors as well.
