Massive ocean vortex that is 'sucking in' fish larvae

There is a massive vortex occurring in the ocean off the coast of West Australia. The vortex is acting as a ‘death trap’ for marine lives. It is sucking in large amounts of fish larvae, which can affect the climate of the region’s surrounding.

It is after a month-long research voyage in the ocean just west of Rottnest Island, a team of the University of Western Australia, Murdoch University, CSIRO scientists and three American, French and Spanish research institutions announced the vortex’s discovery.

The vortex is found 200km in diameter and 1000m deep. Just off the Rottnest Canyon, it is spinning at speeds up to 5kph. This is found by the 10-member team, led by Dr Anya Waite. He is a biological oceanographer from UWA.
