Long-term ozone depletion impact may reduce phytoplankton levels by 60%

Ocean’s food supply can get dramatically affected by ozone depletion’s long-term impacts. This is suggested by a new research in Antarctica. Phytoplankton is a major food source of lower species, like krill. A Tasmanian scientist-group has measured the ozone depletion effects on levels of phytoplankton.

At low ozone concentrations, it is found that phytoplankton levels reduce by 60 per cent, though it has been previously recorded that the reduction is just six per cent. These findings have significant implications for species higher up the food chain.
