Once again it is Los Angeles County! No, not for any achievement in the positive direction, but for possessing the state’s most polluted beach. But, this time a new city — Long Beach — has been anointed as the county’s biggest loser!
Even the executive director of Heal the Bay, Mark Gold is surprised and shocked to find what have never been expected to be at Long Beach, as usually pointing to Santa Monica Bay for the problem has always been a common expectation. Overseeing the annual report, he says,
It seems to be the same overall result, but this year the story is different.
In comparison to last year’s 91 percent, this year, only 12 percent of the Long Beach’s water samples taken in the area got high clean-water marks! City officials, who are still investigating the source of the pollution, guess the part of the problem to be a leaking pump station that has been used by several boats.
The low grade of the city has contributed to the county’s overall poor showing.
