With the current risng trend of temperature and continuous use of energy, the ocean levels are likely to soar at least by half a meter more by 2100. John Harte, professor of energy and resources at the University of California, Berkeley, said this while speaking at the U.S.-China Symposium on Climate Change.
A 3 to 5 degree increase in average global temperature can lead to this halp meter rise in sea levels. And this eventually will eat away few small island nations, leaving a severe impact on Hong Kong.
If the heat waves turn more intense and longer, it will increase in death counts largely, compared to the tragedies the past few summers in Europe have seen, Harte predicts. He further visualizes the scary future with polar bears dying along with the disappearance of their habitat.
“By 2020, the snows of Kilimanjaro could be no more,” Harte added.
