Fetid smelling 'Corpse flower' blooms in Indonesia

The ‘Corpse Flower’ bloomed at the Virginia Tech greenhouse. People who don’t know much about the flower must be frowning at the word — Corpse – used to define the flower! This large Indonesian plant is powerfully malodorous.

The plant emits a fetid smell and for its pollination, it attracts decaying flesh-eating beetles, flies and sweat bees. One can get he smell about 100 feet from the greenhouse! Once the lower blooms, the odor lingers for about eight hours. The plant bloom again after several more years before has enough energy to do so.

The botanical name of the stench plant is Amorphophallus titanium. It began opening up about 6 p.m. Friday and went full bloom by early Saturday morning, curator Debbie Wiley-Vawter informed.
