Engineers Assemble A Model To Annul A Storm

a model of new orleans

It wonderfully and rightly can be claimed as an a€eenormous miniaturea€. Workers, in a cavernous building, are putting in 12-hour days to construct a scale model of a part of New Orleans at Lake Pontchartrain. It is built at one-fiftieth of its actual size.

The 13,000-square-foot model is being built by the Army Corps of Engineers. They are doing it in an effort to recreate the conditions that occurred in Hurricane Katrina and to help the agency figure out why things went so tragically wrong.

$20 million effort has been undertaken to study the effects of the storm, the model being only one part of it. The project also includes computer simulations, intensive data gathering and analysis among other modes of the study.
