Can alternative energy-boom actually stem our world's dirty-energy future?

pollution from car exhausts 9It has been found predicted that global energy use will grow by 53 per cent by 2030! But, inspite of energy efficient and non-fossil fuel power pushing across the world as an alternative, the world is moving into a “dirty, insecure and expensive” energy future!

* The solution

The problem or the solution lies not in the availability of alternative clean fuel, but policies.

It is unless the policies are changed, irrespective of all investments behind producing bio-fuels, fossil fuels will account for 83 per cent of the increase! And carbon emissions will grow by 55 per cent in line with energy consumption, predicted by the International Energy Agency’s influential World Energy Outlook 2006.

A consortium of international researchers has found that it is only between 2000 and 2005; emissions grew four times faster than in the preceding 10 years! From 1990 to 1999, global growth rates were 0.8 per cent and they reached 3.2 per cent just from 2000 to 2005!

* But, again if policies and guidelines are set, how far can the alternative energies satisfy both the consumption demand and the environmental concerns?

And, if even available; supplemented with genetically modified forms — may either lead to several diseases or mal nutrition or expensive crops.

Biodiesel and ethanol — both made from food crops — have already been recently touted as the way to ‘free America of its addiction to foreign oil’ – not questioning the goal to stem greenhouse gases’ rise in the atmosphere.

* Can the ‘must-have’ home wind turbines help save the planet from energy crisis and global warming?

Becoming ‘the ultimate green fashion statement’ wind turbines as part of house architecture actually help environment-conscious people flaunt their green credentials. Besides, it also helps cut on their household electricity bills by 30 per cent.

But, the ‘environmental campaigners’ once boosting windmills as the best alternative and solution to several environmental problems — like energy efficiency, alternative energy, greenhouse gas emission-free — now are saying that wind turbines are not quite what they claim to be! Rather they may actually do more harm than good!

According to them, the turbines produce noise and being unsightly, cause injuries to low flying birds and bats while barely producing enough electricity to power even a hairdryer in many houses. Rather, it has to depend on wind to avail the required energy.

Further, they also do nothing to tackle greenhouses gases! There are said to be far better ways to cut down on energy bills.
