BAT Criticizes UK Smoking Bans

The forthcoming smoking bans in Britain have been criticized by British American Tobacco as it reported a 9% rise in underlying profits. The bans are called by BAT, the world’s second largest tobacco firm after Philip Morris.

The ban will come into force in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales next year. The BAT chairman, Jan du Plessis said, “The real agenda has been based on an intolerant and paternalistic campaign to protect smokers from themselves, rather than meeting its stated objective of protecting the health of non-smokers.”
