MIT To Track Ocean Fish With New Technology

ocean fish

Fish shoals, or populations can now be tracked with a new sensor system. Researchers at MIT, Northeastern and the Naval Research Laborartory have come up with a new technology that can cover over a 10,000 square kilometer area. Till date, the current technology could only scan 100 square meters.

Ships send high-frequency sonar beams into the ocean, under standard scanning techniques. Scientists, to determine the size of objects in the ocean, then track the bouncing of the sonar waves. The new system uses low-frequency sonar. It can travel much greater distances and still return useful information.
