Ice sheets and glaciers are melting dramatically and water from these is gushing into the world’s oceans much faster than previously thought possible, leaving the scientists pondering on the reasons behind it.
The global sea levels are rising unexpectedly by the deluge. The scientists say this phenomenon could eventually submerge island nations, flood cities, and expose millions of coastal residents to destructive storm surges. And it is just by the end of this century; the seas may be three feet (one meter) higher than they are today, a pair of studies that appear in tomorrow’s issue of the journal Science report.
