For how long are the people of the world witnessing the devastating effects of giant storms? Did humans witness tsunami-like catastrophic phenomenon 1,500 years ago too? The ruins of an ancient Byzantine port discovered raise such predictions.
The 1,500-year-old ancient port — uncovered last November in the Yenikapi neighborhood is the largest archaeological dig in Istanbul’s history — have been found with what the archaeologists think might be a church, a gated entrance to the city and eight sunken ships.
Dr. Cemal Pulak, of Texas A&M University and the Institute of Nautical Archaeology in Turkey believes a giant storm has wiped out all the ships at once.
The wooden boats, found make up a sort of ‘missing link’ in the history of shipbuilding because of the fusion of old and new techniques in a single boat, Dr. Pulak explained.
