South Africa, and indeed Africa, is particularly at the greatest risk as water, the scarcest resource and a life-giver is also a cruel killer. Rainfall patterns changes as surface temperatures increase in the interior. And as a dry country, Africa does not have the defences to cope with torrential downpours. Scientists need to work with a great sense of urgency to developing better ways to conserve water, Sonjica suggests. To solve the dire consequences, the vulnerable people of South Africa need to start respecting water.
