Marine Conservation High on Bush's Agenda

President Bush is calling for more federal dollars to conserve America’s oceans and coastlines.

In his fiscal plan for 2008, the president budgeted an additional $140 million to protect oceans, fish and ecosystems.

John Connelly, president of the National Fisheries Institute is quoted to have said:

The fishing industry should be pleased that the administration sees the need for ocean research in order to better understand how all human activity, not just fishing, is affecting oceans,

More than $120 million will go to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey will use the other $20 million.
