Rising sea level and increased storm intensity are endangering many large cities, hence rising fears once thought to be a remote and distant threat. As much as 10 percent of the world’s population is vulnerable, the Earth Institute at Columbia University and the International Institute for Environment and Development researchers suggest.
The low-income countries and the Least Developed Countries have a particularly higher risk from the calamities the disasters can bring, compared to the wealthier countries as they have more resources to deal with climate variability. These findings clearly warn that necessary steps need to be taken by governments concerned to equip these low-income countries to resist the ‘predictable’ natural disasters.
