World-wide refugees to celebrate World Environment Day

refugees from the world to celebrate wed

When the world is burning with environment concerns and researchers and various agencies are busy spotting and predicting the environmental disasters and various after-effects, the United Nations Refugee Agency – UNHCR, is arranging to help internally displaced persons and refugees celebrate World Environment Day on June 5.

Arnauld Akodjenou, head of UNHCR’s Division of Operational Services said,

World Environment Day is an opportunity to draw attention to the dependence of refugees and the internally displaced on natural resources and to urge everyone to be considerate in the use and protection of these resources.

Though this year’s theme is ‘Desert and Desertification’ with the World Environment Day 2006 slogan — “Don’t Desert Drylands!” the UNHCR has chosen a slogan for itself “Combat Land Degradation in Refugee-Hosting Areas.” The agency used this theme to make it more applicable and relevant to most of the situations close to refugees.
