World Environment Day 2006 slogan: 'Don't desert drylands'

Established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly, the World Environment Day (WED) is hosted every year by a different city. It is commemorated with a week-long international exposition of June 5. The UN uses the day as a platform to stimulate environment-awareness, enhancing political attention and public action.

The topic for World Environment Day 2006 is –
Deserts and Desertification. This year’s slogan is “Don’t desert drylands”.

This slogan emphasises the importance of protecting drylands, as drylands cover more than 40% of the planet’s surface. Home to one-third of the world’s population the ecosystem is vital to them. The main international celebrations of the World Environment Day 2006 will be held in Algeria —– United Nations.

Countries like India, the hot beds of environmental issues are also celebrating the day in various ways with a similar goal.

India’s state of Hyderabad has planned to celebrate this day by honoring districts of Anantapur, Nizamabad and Vizianagaram with awards. These three districts have been selected for special World Environment Day awards. A high-level committee comprising senior officials from Rural Development, Panchayat Raj and Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) will do all the honours on the day, encouraging other parts of the country to take part in the competition by next year.

Environment Minister of Scotland, Ross Finnie has urged the people living in the city to make a pledge on World Environment Day. It is while launching the Scottish Executive’s pledge website, he made the plea.

The Environment Agency too, pledges us to make promises to help change the earth, making it a better place to live in — Promise the Earth in 2006. It says, “Make your promise now and do your bit to make the world a better place.” Make your promises here.
