Wild, cold wind-blast in Southern Calif. did little to quench its parched regions

tuesday march 27 2007 9

The Southern California where the weather is normally mild has been blasted with a quick wintry fierce winds and cold temperatures. The off season storm startled residents, with the clear morning skies quickly darkening.

To add to the surprise, gusting winds ripped roofs off several buildings and capsized boats. The winds also shattered power lines and trees. But, the winds along with the rain did not quench the parched region.

Larry Prantner, manager of Cavi at the Big Oaks Lodge restaurant in the Santa Clarita community of Saugus said,

I’ve never seen weather like this. It’s March and I’m wearing a coat and starting a fire at the fireplace.

According to meteorologists at the National Weather Service, moisture and cool air sweeping through warmer, dry air created the storm. They also predict warmer temperatures through the rest of the week.

Bonnie Bartling, a National Weather Service specialist, told the Los Angeles Times said,

In most places, we got zero or trace amounts of rain. Even in the mountains, we didn’t get a whole lot of rain. This was mostly a wind system.
