Why throw things away when you can recycle them the DIY way

With the garage and storeroom of our house cluttered with all kind of garbage, it is often a mindboggling task for most of us that what use they could be put to apart from landing them in landfill sites.

There are host of items – plastic bottles, food cans, broken and non-functional kitchen vessels and gadgets that we rake in some corner of the garage. Here we bring to you some interesting ideas that will help ignite your imagination and transform this junk into items of utility for your houses.

Just cut away a plastic bottle from the neck part. Take a plastic bag and fill the desired contents into it. Pull out the open top end of the bag through the cap. Fold the remaining polythene outwards around the neck of the bottle and secure it with the cap.

Bottle to water the plants

Bottle to water the plants

This idea would be interesting to the gardeners. There are some plants in our gardens that need little watering. We risk overwatering or neglecting them altogether. Just make pinhole on a plastic water bottle at multiple points.

Place the bottle inside the soil close to the plant that you wish to water, leaving its neck out in the air. Pour in water. The water will thus slowly percolate into the spoil. Remember to secure the bottle tightly from all side with soil or else the water from the bottle will quickly drain out, inundating the roots of the plant.

Cut away the lower half of the bottle. Invert the remaining half with the mouth placed downwards. Take a discarded CD and stick the mouth of the bottle to it. This will act as the base of the table lamp. Place in a wired bulb socket into it. Your table lamp glowing in the color of the bottle is ready.

Spoons decoration items

We all have discarded spoons lying around in the house, stashed away with us not knowing what to do with them. These spoons can make some very interesting decoration motifs for your Dining room. One such item is spoon stand.

Simply mould the handles of the spoons and brace them against the wall. The cup shaped part can be used to place knick-knacks like match sticks and tiny jewelry into them. Further, we can put together a number of these spoons to make sun disc, which we can then mount on the wall.

You can transform the old colanders into interesting Pendant lights to light up your kitchen table. Drill a hole in the centre of the base of each of them. Suspend a wired bulb socket into it. Secure the whole to the ceiling with the help of strings or chains. If it strikes your fancy, you can paint them in bright colors. In this case, a contrasting scheme of colors will be vibrant. Your kitchen lights are ready.

Your house garages and storerooms are not simply dumping grounds for discarded items but raw material for inventing something new.
