What role do natural organic matters play in the environment?

natural organic matter 9The pollution of water purification and desalination facilities is always a problem across the world. In an effort to prevent pollution of these facilities, U.S. scientists are studying the role natural organic matters play in the environment.

The molecular mechanisms leading to the complex behavior of natural organic matter are being studied by the scientists. In the study, they are finding both the negative and positive effects not only on the structure, but also on water retention capability and soil’s nutrient properties.

For investigating some of the factors contributing to the dissolved natural organic matter’s complex behavior, researchers are using computer simulations and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Their findings will be presented this week in San Francisco’s annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.
