What caused giant tsunami 8,000 years ago?

Tsunami has still left scars in the mind of all, not mentioning the victims! But, it did not shake the world only in 2004, but also sometimes 8,000 years ago! But, what made it happen?

According to geological evidences, the eastern flanks of Mount Etna collapsed nearly 8,000 years ago kicking up a giant tsunami.

Italian scientists at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology have studied the collapse of the volcano, located on Italy’s island of Sicily. Modeling the collapse, they discovered that the landslide material’s volume, combined with the debris avalanche’s force, would have generated a catastrophic tsunami! Such a tsunami could impact the entire Eastern Mediterranean.

Entitled ‘The Lost Tsunami’, the study is published in the current issue of Geophysical Research Letters journal.
