Warmer Temperatures Diverted Alaska's Famed Sled Dog Race

Weather in Alaska is warm enough to divert the famed sled dog race. Warmer weather here prompted organizers of the Iditarod Trail sled dog race to think of another trail for the game. The snow at the southern end of the course is sparse this time. And it has moved the grueling 1,100-mile race from its traditional route.

This year the race will start in Willow, a small community 30 miles north of Wasilla — where it usually begins. “If there’s anything on the ground, its ice and very little snow,” race executive director Stan Hooley said.
