Wal-Mart Innovates With Corn-Based Plastic Packaging

As reported in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Wal-Mart is going green. We have heard of plastic packaging that is petroleum-based. But, the retail giant Wal-Mart is not only going green but innovative with corn-based plastic packaging. With the first substitution, the nation’s largest grocery seller involves 114 million clear-plastic clamshell containers used annually by the retailer for cut fruit, herbs, strawberries and brussels sprouts, starting November 1. This is claimed by Wal-Mart executive Matt Kistler at a conference in Philadelphia. The company claim to save the equivalent of 800,000 gallons of gasoline and reduce more than 11 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions with this about-face of packaging.
