UK's acid rain may erase thousands of species in just 50 years!

acid rain

Acid rain has been scourging Europe’s forests and lakes for long. And, eventually it is emerging as a major threat to diversity across the tropics! With countries like India, Brazil and China industrializing rapidly, car emissions along with the ones from power stations and factory farms are threatening the rainforests alarmingly.

It is not sparing even the other biodiversity hotspots, victims of acidic, nitrogen-rich rains! And this treacherous phenomenon threatens to erase thousands of species from the planet over just the next 50 years!

Gareth Phoenix of the University of Sheffield, UK, also the author of a study on nitrogen deposition currently published in an issue of Global Change Biology said,

Air pollution poses a far greater threat to global biodiversity than previously considered.
