Treasuring Only Prayers, Tears to Mark the Tsunami Anniversary

tsunami anniversary

One complete year has passed, but the tears in the mourners’ eyes show how fresh the wounds are still deep in their hearts. Tearful mourners from around the world gathered to light candles and offer prayers for the soul of the dead, their dear ones. It was on the anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami, they have come to offer prayers, one of the deadliest natural disasters ever.

Be it on beaches or in homes, at mosques and in churches, it is from Indonesia to Sweden, the survivors and relatives remembered the more than 220,000 people killed when the waves slammed into a dozen countries one year ago.

“Let us now bow our heads in silence to pray for the souls of hundreds of thousands who lost their lives,” Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said, sounding a siren that forms part of an early warning system being set up to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.
