Thawing permafrost could unleash 75 times more carbon than each year's fossil fuel-burning can!

Long-frozen soil in Siberia has been treasuring roots and bones for ages. And these ancient roots and bones now are starting to thaw. But, the scientists fear that this phenomenon can accelerate global warming, as these materials have the potential to unleash billions of tons of carbon!

According to the researchers, this vast carbon reservoir contains about 75 times more carbon, compared to the amount released into the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels each year! This reservoir is contained in the permafrost soil of northeastern Siberia.

Ecologist Ted Schuur of the University of Florida informed that this is “a lot”! It is a fact twice what scientists previously believed was there by any measure!
