Sweden ranked no.1 in climate change list!

Sweden, Britain and Denmark are doing the most to protect against climate change. But, are their efforts enough or moving on the lines of the necessities?

Environmental group Germanwatch has released a report Monday, saying that the countries’ efforts are not nearly enough!

With the index ranking 56 countries — part of a 1992 climate treaty or that contribute at least 1 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions — they make up 90 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions.

The world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, the United States ranked at 53, with only China, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia in the list of those doing worse. Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest exporter of oil.

It is found that about one-quarter of the energy consumed in Sweden in 2003 came from renewable sources, which is more than four times as much as the European Union average of 6 per cent.

In Stockholm, one-quarter of city buses run on ethanol or biogas.

Matthias Duwe of the Climate Action Network-Europe, which released the data at the U.N. climate conference, said disappointedly,

We don’t have any winners, we only have countries that are better compared to others… We don’t have big shining stars.

If you try to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, you will also reduce oil consumption… So Saudi oil will be in less demand.
