Stricter Emissions Standards for Cars by EU Commission

polluting carIt’s no good news for sport utility vehicles, who escape the EU pollution limits. To impose stricter emission standards on vehicles, the European Commission approved a bill Wednesday. It also seeks to close a loophole that allows gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles escape pollution limits.

The executive arm of the European Union also approved plans that would oblige public bodies to spend at least a quarter of their spending on buses, garbage trucks and other heavy vehicles on those using “clean” technology such as biofuels, electric motors or natural gas.

Under the new rules, vehicles that are subject to less stringent pollution restrictions would no longer be classified as light commercial vehicle by SUV manufacturers, EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen declares.
