Soft Drinks, Fruit Juices Preservatives Risk Cancer

fruit juices

Cancer from soft drinks and fruit juices! Yes, both the drinks contain a dangerous combination of two preservatives which could be increasing consumers’ risk for cancer. Tests on 230 soft drinks sold in the United Kingdom have benzene levels above the safety limit for water, according to a report in BeverageDaily.com.

Soft drinks contain sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) – the two preservatives. The latest study was carried out on a range of such soft drinks. These two preservatives seem to produce benzene in the presence of heat and ultra-violet light!

The Environmental Working Group published a similar report on drinks produced in the United States. It advised consumers to make a point to avoid soft drinks and juices that contain both ascorbic acid and sodium benzoate because of the possible danger of ingesting the carcinogenic benzene.
