Single-Pass Harvester for Corn and Stover harvesting

the dual stream single pass harvester 9

For converting cellulose into ethanol, various resources are available in the market. But, how can a stover be supplied from the field to the biorefinery? Researchers have designed a single-pass system, capable of harvesting both corn kernels and stover, i.e. stalks, cobs and leaves.

The stover can be used as a feedstock for cellulosic ethanol. The new ‘dual-stream, single-pass harvesting system’ has a modified row crop header and corn reel. With the reel attached to the front of the combine, a chopper and blower are attached to its back.

Thanks to the researchers at Iowa State University. The system was developed by Stuart Birrell, an Iowa State associate professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, and graduate students Mark Dilts and Ben Schlesser.

The system is based on a John Deere 9750 STS combine.
