Send SMS to know if the fish in your favorite dish is endangered!

Fish lovers and also ones crazy about its delicacies, but concerned about their becoming endangered and their conservation, can now order the right menu in your favorite restaurant without pondering on if the species is going extinct.

What you have to do is just send a ‘text message’. It will, in a moment, provide you with information on whether that tender sashimi is from a plentiful or an endangered species. And you can either enjoy your favorite delicacy or avoid ordering a dish without worrying.

Named FishMS, the color-coded service signals ‘green’ meaning go ahead and eat! As its population numbers are normal. The ‘orange’ color signals that though a particular species is legal for selling, the supplies are in danger. Species, which are marked ‘red’ means that the fish is illegal to buy or sell within the country.

This is all happening in South Africa. The Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative launched this ‘text message’ service with a goal to combat the overexploitation of the world’s fish, 76 percent of which have been fished to maximum levels.

Supported by the country’s government, the international environmentalist group WWF, and others, the coordinator of the initiative, Jaco Barendse said,

Simply send the name of a fish to the number and you will immediately get a message telling you whether to tuck in, think twice or avoid completely.
