Increased and continuous illicit logging has pushed the 130 million-year-old tropical rainforest in Malaysia under threat. Environmental activists warned on this at the launch of a campaign to encourage and aware on greater efforts to protect the national heritage.
Adding to the legal timber operations, illegal loggers have lead to damaging the ecological system, which brought 300,000-hectare (741,300-acre) of the forest under threat. This in informed by the Belum-Temengor Forest complex in northern Perak state, the Malaysian Nature Society.
Along with nine other private groups and beauty products retailer ‘The Body Shop’, the nature society launched a six-month campaign that would collect 50,000 signatures. These signatures will be petitioned to the government to save the forests.
The nature society said in a statement,
The two reserves function as a single ecosystem and together are a global treasure that is irreplaceable and immensely more valuable than the timber contained within,” the nature society said in a statement.
