Project to minimize catastrophic impact of natural disaster!

natural disaster 9

To prevent natural disasters from becoming catastrophic in terms of the critical civil infrastructure or life losses and property damages, a project is undertaken at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

Auroop Ganguly of Oak Ridge`s Computational Sciences and Engineering Division and project lead said,

Our goal is to save lives by providing policymakers with the information they need to anticipate and perhaps prevent catastrophic disasters. The insights we`re providing can be acted upon to prevent the disasters from becoming catastrophic in terms of loss of lives and property or to the critical civil infrastructure.

Making daily observations from 7,900 stations in South America from 1940 to 2004, the scientists mapped to spatial grids, concentrating on rainfall extremes and regions with dense populations.

After examining past extremes, researchers developed a predictive tool that helps Ganguly and his team set priorities according to an extreme event’s likelihood, co-author George Ostrouchov, a mathematician in Oak Ridge`s Computational Sciences and Mathematics Division said.

Will this project eventually go beyond current disaster preparation?
