Polar bears turning cannibalistic! Blame global warming?

polar bears turning cannibalistic

Polar bears turning to cannibalism! Yes. But how? Here again global warming is to be blamed. The polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean are becoming cannibals. This is because seasons without ice are getting longer. And this keeps the polar bears from getting to their natural food. This study is made by scientists from America and Canada.

Polar bears there are preying on each other, as studies have found such cases from January to April 2004 in the north of Alaska and western Canada. This also includes the first-ever killing of a female in a den shortly after it gave birth.

According to the study, polar bears kill each other to regulate population, dominate and reproduce. They primarily feed on ringed seals and feed, mate and give birth using sea ice.

The scientists said,

During 24 years of research on polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea region of northern Alaska and 34 years in north-western Canada, we have not seen other incidents of polar bears stalking, killing and eating other polar bears.
