It was said previously that about 180 billion-years ago a dramatic rise in the earth’s temperature led to the extinction of various species. To, add to this extinction phenomenon, scientists claim another factor to be responsible. Poisonous volcanic gas too, may probably have shared hand in the Earth’s greatest mass extinction. And this, supposed to have occurred 250 million years ago that killed more than two-thirds of reptile and amphibian families.
But, scientists claim too, that it also facilitated the rise of the dinosaurs, which would rule Earth for the next 185 million years. This new evidence comes from molecules preserved in rocks laid down at the time of the extinction. The extinction may have included an asteroid colliding with our planet or a massive release of methane from the deep sea, other causes suggested. It has been claimed before that the end-Permian extinction coincided with a major volcanic eruption. This led to the biggest ever outpouring of basalt lava, covering vast swathes of land in what is now Siberia.
