‘The forest is important for them.’ The mountain villagers are rocked by this realization as the nerve-racking earthquake on Oct. 8 flattened much of northern Pakistan. But, this lesson did not relieve the conservationists of their failing preaches towards the concern. They along with the government officials are worried that necessity will drive survivors to hack down trees to save themselves from the winter chill.
It’s both pleasing and disappointing that it took more than 73,000 lives in the Pakistani Himalayas for the communities to realize the importance of vegetation. The 7.6 magnitude earthquake killed many people when landslides triggered by the quake swept down mountain slopes, taking villages, farms and roads with them. In some areas, whole mountain sides collapsed.
It’s the biggest paradigm of time that other parts of the world take up as an ineluctable lesson on their responsibility towards the environment, when they claim it from the nature!
