'Once-thought-to-be-extinct' Rare Woodpecker spotted in Florida!

an ivory billed woodpecker

Believed to be extinct until 2004, the ivory-billed woodpecker has again been spotted in remote northwest Florida swamps. Researchers discovered it again on the planet, searching for it there for months.

This large size woodpecker makes a distinct double rapping sound. Auburn ornithologist Geoffrey Hill, who headed the four-month Florida search ending in April, heard the bird’s unique call 41 times!

Sorry, a picture of the large woodpecker could not be provided as the Auburn University ornithologists, who published their findings in Canada’s Avian Conservation and Ecology journal online Tuesday, failed to capture its photo.

This lack of evidence again naturally raises doubt about the bird’s return. But, you can still keep your fingers crossed. It is sometime around November, he said, he would return to the Choctawhatchee River basin with his team and better equipment to try to get photographs.
