Northern fur seals declined by 50% in last 25 years!

northern fur seals

While some small populations the poor, harmless seals of Alaska are increasing; in the past 25 years, there has been a 50 per cent drop in the number of northern fur seals in the main colony on Pribilus Island off Alaska, a Tasmanian seal researcher has found.

But, this is a real concer. She has been tracking these young northern fur seals with the help of satellite, tagging at least 99 of these animals.n! Unfortunately, many of these animals died either in Arctic storms or were eaten by killer whales and sea lions.

And the rest? – by us. The local people of Pribilus have been dependent on these populations for hundreds of years now – and hence contribute to this dwindling!

What other factors are influencing the decline is still to be spotted. Once discovered, perhaps something could be done about it, true. Let the scientists and researchers do their job. Hey there! — our hunter brothers, can’t we do our bit towards saving them now, in our best little efforts?
