New Orleans people will be evacuated and not sheltered: New disaster strategy

new orleans hurricane devastation

Hence, another new disaster strategy to face the approaching hurricane season in New Orleans. With the hurricane season expected to run from June to November, New Orleans Mayor, Ray Nagin has unveiled a new strategy recently. Previously it was planned that the city’s largest buildings will be used as shelters. But, according to the new strategy, this plan has been abandoned! Instead, now the focus will be on getting people out of the city.

Is it Mr Nagin’s re-election strategy? He was criticized over the city’s response to Hurricane Katrina last year.

Last year, when Katrina killed more than 1,300 people on the Gulf Coast, the city’s Superdome stadium and Morial Convention Center were transformed into scenes of misery and desperation. But, now according to Mr Nagin, these places will be used only as transit points, as there will be no shelter of last resort.

To evacuate people, public transport, including trains, would be used and the new plan would allow for people to take their “caged” pets with them, as it emerged that many people had refused to leave last time without their animals.
