Mount Merapi: can erupt any time

mount merapi erupting2

The Mount Merapi has been erupting for weeks and has led to a red alert declaration. Volcanic activity has intesified of late, with continuous clouds of ash, gas and rock fragments spewing from its crater. Scientists say that one of the emissions sent a pile of debris that flowed down 4km (2.5 miles) on one side of the mountain.

This Saturday, while monitoring the volcano in central Java, experts raised its alert status to the highest level. Though thousands of people have been moved from the upper slopes of the volcano, few are still refusing to leave.

The volcano is becoming more and more active by the day. A thin coat of volcanic ash has by now, covered at least one village, which is about 3 km (2 miles) from the crater.

A vulcanologist on Merapi told the BBC that though he now believes the volcano is in the early stages of an eruption, it was not possible to predict “when it will reach its peak”.
