Moss serves the ecosystem beyond camparison. Yes, as we all know, it serves as the sponge to the forest in various ways, stores water and releases nutrients and houses tiny critters. But, it’s a different story across Appalachia and in the Pacific Northwest, and for people who have to meet their ends when jobless or the hostile environment provides few jobs. Ripping up a long section of the living carpet, the aborigines sort it, dry it and package it to those who ship and sell it. That is how they earn their bread. Since moss is not commercially grown, environmentalists are concerned if the indigenes will rob the wood of it! If mosses leave the ecosystem, there will be an environmental catastrophe. To find a solution the Governments should balance between banning and harvesting moss.
