Monument to Waste: Arch-shaped sculpture made from trashed water bottles

Yesterday the University of Vermont students, faculty and staff became a part of the Bottled Water ‘Retirement Party’, which was celebrated to remind students of the bottled water ban going effective from Jan 1. The event was further marked with the installation of a monument in the student center. Made from 2,000 empty plastic water bottles, the arch-shaped sculpture titled “Inherently Unstable and Prone to Collapse: A Monument to Waste” was designed and created by UVM Art Department faculty member Beth Haggart. Students Casey Smith and Ashley Roche lent a helping hand towards the creation of the recycled plastic water bottle sculpture.

The ban aide memoire, i.e. 10-foot high sculpture further utilizes discarded bicycle tire inner tubes and scrapped cardboard. Since students won’t have access to bottled water through vending machines, retail outlets or dining halls within the University campus, the UVM will convert 75 drinking fountains on campus to water filling stations.
