Legal permit to Navy's sonar-using kicked up concerns for dolphins, whales

dolphins deaths caused by us navys sonar

Despite concerns and protests from environmentalists to prevent the Navy from using sonar, as it could not only disturb but also kill whales and dolphins, the federal regulators granted them with the permission to use sonar in a maritime exercise.

Such a permit is granted to the Navy for the first time – and it is sure to kick up an agitation and resistance among the environmentalists and conservationists — as the environmental group, Natural Resources Defense Council, warned of waging a war by declaring that it would file a lawsuit Wednesday to prevent the use of sonar.

Though the month-long exercise began Monday off the Hawaiian Islands, the sonar part will be beginning after July 4 and is about to last for three weeks then.
