Kill to Save: A Solution to Survival Conflict…!

Kill to save! How do you go by this oxymoron?…. The California Department of Fish and Game is exactly banking on it, may be to serve their interest! The survival battle since the early 1980s, have been waged once again, in a new fire, between the endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep and the domestic sheep. Highly vulnerable to diseases carried by the domestics, the Sierra community, once believed to be numbered 1,000 or so, now have dwindled to about 100 and they were enlisted as a federally endangered species, in 1999. Carrying strains of pneumonia-causing bacteria, Pasteurella, the domestic animals have been killing the bighorns by infecting respiratory diseases. The California agency has eventually chalked out a solution to this – by killing the bighorns, as they are concerned of their sufferings. What an irony to the endangered bighorns! Johanna Wald of the Natural Resources Defense Council as a protest to this idea have suggested to find a better and reasonable solution – that is to keep wild sheep away from domestic sheep.
